Pet mill animals face a heightened risk of acquiring serious health issues such as heart disease, kidney disease, blood disorders, deafness, and lifelong paralysis due to overbreeding.
Harold, a young pup, was sold to an unsuspecting buyer for $7,000, barely able to breathe. He was taken home by his new owner who nursed him through a respiratory illness.
Tragically, Harold suddenly lost the use of his hind legs due to spinal curvature caused by overbreeding in the pet mill—an affliction similar to scoliosis that rendered his hindquarters numb.
Harold’s owner then surrendered him to Dallas DoggRRR, who rushed him to an emergency animal hospital.
During his two-day hospital stay, Harold struggled to eat without vomiting. Doctors discovered ulcerations, intestinal strictures, stomach adhesions, enlarged lymph nodes, elevated liver enzymes, and gastric fluid in his abdomen and esophagus during an emergency exploratory surgery.
Despite these challenges, Harold has become a permanent resident at Dallas DoggRRR for several years now. He serves as their rescue mascot and social media ambassador, embodying resilience and the ongoing need for pet mill awareness.
