When a woman in the Bronx, New York, recently noticed a skinny figure roaming the halls of her apartment building, the confused tenant couldn’t help but investigate. She soon locked eyes with an emaciated brown and white puppy, a lost little girl named Baby Gina.
The woman contacted Second Chance Rescue, who quickly sent experts to bring Baby Gina to safety.
According to a Facebook post published at the time, the months-old pup was vomiting and weak. Baby Gina’s ribs poked out from her taut skin. Rescuers made a comprehensive plan for her healthcare and hoped it would be enough.
“There are so many unknowns,” Second Chance Rescue wrote in the post. “We are just praying she can pull through. She is just a baby.”
News of Baby Gina’s rescue went viral on social media, as thousands of worried commenters sent words of support for her recovery. A local news station broadcast Baby Gina’s story, further driving donations toward her care. Second Chance Rescue staff were amazed by the little dog’s capacity to inspire.
“Gina is so grateful to be surrounded by so much love,” Second Chance wrote in a Facebook post.
These days, Baby Gina is still recovering at Second Chance Rescue, slowly gaining strength and coming out of her shell. Rescuers are ensuring she has everything she needs — including fancy outerwear.
“Gina remains hospitalized and is doing well — she is happy, she is loved and she is recovering,” Second Chance wrote in a Facebook post. “She even has a bunch of new sweaters to keep her warm while she gains weight.”
With any luck, this resilient puppy will soon be out of the hospital, headed for a warm bed inside the permanent home of her dreams.
