A dog slipped down a rabbit hole and was stuck for more than two days before being rescued.
Flossie, a terrier, fell down a rabbit hole and was trapped for over two days before being rescued.
In a dramatic rescue video, the terrier survived an astonishing 56 hours underground before being pulled from the dirt.
According to a TikTok video recorded by her owner, Poppy Vernon, Flossie went missing on April 25. The video shows someone digging a deep hole while voices call out for the dog. They suspected the 9-year-old pup had gotten stuck in a rabbit hole outside her home in Devon, England.
The challenge was that hundreds of rabbit tunnels surrounded their property. They spent hours calling down the holes and even used underground cameras. Their search continued all night, but even a team of tracking dogs couldn’t find Flossie after hours of searching.
Surprisingly, Poppy reported that about five hours later, a neighbor heard a “tiny bark” coming from behind a shrub. The search dogs returned and this time, they found Flossie.
Tom Leary, a man in the video wearing a green shirt, leaned into the hole with both arms spread. Finally, as Leary chiselled away at the hole’s wall, Flossie’s little head became visible deep within. He was eventually able to free her from her underground captivity.
Despite losing weight, Flossie was generally unharmed after spending four days away and so many hours in the dirt and muck. The video of her rescue has received over 3.6 million views.
“We’re just glad to have her by our sides again and, yeah, give her cuddles,” Vernon told the BBC.
In another TikTok, Vernon explained that she believes Flossie found a hole, fell through it, and then dug her own trail underground, blocking her way out.
“She just fully, you know, buried herself alive,” she said.
With that in mind, Vernon said it’s “amazing” they found her and they’ll keep a closer eye on her when she walks outdoors from now on.
