Sadly, many dogs are not fortunate enough to live with a happy and loving family. Every day, dogs of various breeds, sizes, and ages are abandoned on the streets and left to fend for themselves.
It’s disheartening, but thankfully, for every bad person out there, there are hundreds of amazing ones who do remarkable things. Thanks to shelters like Lewis and Clark Humane Society, many dogs get a second chance at life.
This shelter in Helena, Montana, is an open-admission humane society that takes in over 1,500 animals each year. They have a 98% adoption rate and keep all dogs for as long as it takes for them to find their forever home. Some dogs get adopted quickly, but for others, the shelter almost becomes a permanent home. While it’s better than being alone on the streets, nothing can beat having loving parents and a home.
Bubba Jr. is one of those dogs who was a long-time resident of the shelter, staying for 93 days. He’s a beautiful boy, but as a Pitbull, he faced difficulties getting adopted. The shelter once posted, “People keep throwing Pitbulls around. Pitbull? Pittie? House Hippo? Slobber Monster? LCHS doesn’t care. They see me for what I am. A giant meathead loveable dog!” Unfortunately, negative stereotypes and pet restrictions in rentals make it hard for Pitbulls like Bubba Jr. to find homes.
Despite the challenges, Bubba Jr. was described by the shelter as “Most Likely to Kiss.” He loved giving kisses, cuddling, going for walks, and watching movies with his human teammates. One volunteer, in particular, formed a special bond with Bubba.
After 93 days, this volunteer decided to end Bubba’s quest for a forever home and adopted him. The whole shelter celebrated this beautiful moment, sharing Bubba’s diary entry on Facebook:
“Dear Diary, It’s day 5 in my new home and boy are things different… I love my new life in this place called ‘home’. Every day I wake up with my Favorite Volunteer and everyday is the best day ever!”
This volunteer’s selfless act highlighted the importance of giving shelter dogs a chance. If you’re planning to get a dog, please visit your local shelter. You might become someone’s Favorite Volunteer and brighten their life. Many dogs are waiting to find someone who will love them forever, but sadly, many don’t have the opportunity to stay at the shelter until they find a home.
