Old dog in Portugal, breaks record for world’s oldest dog ever

A 30-year-old purebred Rafeiro do Alentejo has been declared the world’s oldest dog at 30 years and 266 days, Guinness World Records said.

A new dog has been added to the list of “oldest dogs in the world,” and he resides in Portugal on his family’s farm.

Born on May 11, 1992, in the village of Conqueiros close to the city of Leiria, Bobi is a purebred Rafeiro do Alentejo. On February 1, he turned 30 years and 266 days old, making him the oldest dog in existence as well as the oldest dog ever recognized by Guinness World Records.
According to GWR, the lifespan of a Rafeiro do Alentejo, a breed of livestock guardian dog, is 12 to 14 years on average.
Just a few weeks earlier, on Thursday, a Chihuahua mix named Spike from Ohio was crowned the world’s oldest living dog at 23 years and 43 days.
According to GWR, Bluey, an Australian cattle dog, held the previous record for the oldest dog ever documented after living for 29 years and 5 months before passing death in November 1939.
Leonel, the dog’s owner, who was just 8 years old when Bobi was born, called the dog “one of a kind.” Over the years, Leonel and his canine companion shared many special moments, including playing and going to school together.
According to the organization in charge of keeping records, Bobi was registered with the Veterinary Medical Service of the Municipality of Leiria in 1992, which verified Bobi’s birthdate. It further stated that SIAC, a pet database sanctioned by the Portuguese government and run by Portugal’s national association of veterinarians, had additionally validated the age of the dog.
According to his family, Bobi is a very kind and peaceful dog that enjoys playing with his four cat siblings. He often spends his days walking, eating, and resting, but according to his family, his favorite pastime is exploring the fields and pine forests near his home.
According to GWR, Bobi also enjoys food and typically consumes it with his owners, who are “careful to make sure it’s unseasoned and dog-friendly.”
Despite having some issues with movement and vision in 2018, the elderly dog overcame a “health scare” and is now leading a regular life, according to the record-keeping organization. His family thinks that living in the country, in a serene setting, and being surrounded by nature is the key to his long life, according to GWR.
“Bobi has been a warrior for all these years; only he knows how he’s been holding on; it could not have been easy because the typical dog’s life span is not that high,” Leonel said in a statement. “If he spoke only he could explain this success.” We are really thrilled and appreciative that Bobi is still a part of our daily lives after 30 years.
Leonel said, saying it gives him “an amazing thrill” to have Bobi’s lengthy life recognized by Guinness World Records.
