An Arkansas couple has made a significant sacrifice to help a dog in need, using their wedding savings to cover the cost of medical treatment for a Goldendoodle they found severely injured.
Dylan McCay and his fiancée, Emily Roberts, made the decision after discovering the dog abandoned on the side of a road.
The couple’s decision came after reading a Facebook post on October 31 about the injured dog. McCay drove to the location, where he found the Goldendoodle, later named Acklin, had been struck by a vehicle in a hit-and-run. McCay quickly realized the severity of her condition and rushed to help.
According to McCay and Roberts, the dog had been left in the rain, shivering and covered in blood. Her back legs appeared broken, and she was struggling to breathe. McCay immediately gathered towels and blankets to provide comfort and took her to Greenbrier Animal Hospital for treatment.
At the hospital, veterinarians discovered Acklin had fractured both femurs and expressed concern about the possibility of infection due to her exposure to the rain.
Faced with mounting medical costs, McCay and Roberts agreed to use the money from their wedding fund to pay for Acklin’s extensive reconstructive surgery, which was estimated to cost between $10,000 and $15,000. The couple stated they were determined to give the dog a chance at a better life.
“We have pulled the money from our wedding fund and our overall life savings to fund these medical expenses,” the couple wrote on Facebook. “We are excited to help this wonderful girl and give her the best possible life.”
In addition to funding the surgery, McCay and Roberts expressed their hope to provide Acklin with long-term care. To help with the ongoing costs, they set up a GoFundMe.com campaign to raise funds for her recovery.
On November 5, the couple updated supporters, sharing that Acklin’s surgery had been successful. They are now focused on raising money for her rehabilitation, which they anticipate will be costly.
“Her rehabilitation and therapy will be expensive, but we are doing everything we can for our sweet girl,” McCay and Roberts said. “Thanks to all of you, she is receiving the help she so greatly deserves.”
