Despite everything he’s been through, Zeus is still finding reasons to keep his head high and his tail wagging every day.

The 6-month-old pit bull mix came to the Sacramento SPCA (SSPCA) last week as a surrendered pet. Zeus had been violently attacked by another dog in his previous home for unknown reasons, leaving Zeus with a broken leg as well as ripped gums.

Zeus’ owners took him to the vet after the attack, but decided it was in his best interest to give him up as they were unable to afford his medical care, Sarah Varanini, foster care coordinator at the SSPCA, told The Dodo.

“The [broken] leg was swollen, oozing, infected and painful and there was a good possibility of a bone infection as well, due to the severity of the bite,” Varanini said.

“Our veterinarian determined that an amputation would be in Zeus’ best interest and have the fastest recovery time with the least amount of complications,” she added.

His surgery was performed the day after he arrived at the SSPCA. Now, Zeus is now learning to navigate through life with only three legs — but he’s not missing a single beat.

Varanini said that throughout the entire ordeal — from arriving to the shelter through having surgery — Zeus has given nothing but love to the people caring for him.

“Zeus has been a dream patient — giving licks and tail wags to all of the staff,” she said.
