Mia’s journey began when she was rescued from unsuitable living conditions at just 9 days old and brought to the RSPCA. After spending her first six months in a foster home, she had to return to the shelter due to difficulties with the foster family’s dog. Since then, Mia has been waiting at the shelter for someone to choose her.
“Mia arrived as a tiny puppy and has spent nearly her entire life in kennels,” said Claire Hoffman, one of Mia’s caretakers at the RSPCA’s Southridge Animal Centre, in a press release.
Mia has now been at the shelter for four years and four months, equivalent to over 32 years in dog years. During this time, she has seen 1,596 other animals at Southridge find homes while she waits. Her friends at the shelter, however, remain hopeful for her future.

“Despite her tough start in life and the poor conditions she endured early on, we’ve shown her as much love as possible, and she’s grown into a wonderful dog,” Hoffman said. “But living in kennels for such a long time is no life for a dog like her, and we believe she may sadly be the RSPCA’s longest-staying resident.”
It’s been a long time since anyone has inquired about Mia, and her caretakers find it hard to understand why. Mia has specific needs for her future home, but her supporters are confident that the perfect match is out there.
“She needs someone experienced with dogs who can dedicate time to her training,” Hoffman explained. “We believe she’s best suited to an adult-only home with no visiting children and where she’ll be the only pet. A secure garden where she can play with her football and roam would be ideal.”
Prospective adopters would need to visit Mia a few times to build trust before taking her home. Mia is a highly intelligent dog who would thrive in an environment where she can learn tricks and play games, but she will also need time and space to adjust.
Mia’s friends at the shelter have done everything possible to prepare her for adoption. Now, she just needs to find her person.
“What Mia really needs is an owner who can give her the one-on-one time and attention she deserves and help her adapt to life in a home,” Hoffman said.
